Prayer request #1:
On the way to get a part for our carpet shampooer my husband got in an accident. He is fine, but the van and the other 3 cars he hit are not! The front of the van is totaled pretty badly. Since he was the one in the back that hit everyone it automatically makes it his fault. So not only are we looking at raised insurance rates and a very high deductible ($500), but there is the possibility that the damage is more than the van is worth. If that's the case then the insurance can choose to not pay for the damages. That would be very very bad for 3 reasons. 1) We owe more than the van is worth. 2) We have no gap insurance and 3) It is our ONLY means of transportation! We are in a very bad position right now. It always seems that every time we start to get financially okay something comes up. Go figure huh! :)
Prayer request #2:
I went to order the rest of Masons curriculum today. I thought I would look at the twins some handwriting books since I like theirs so much. Well that just confused me more! :) When Mason was in Kindergarten he learned what was called pre-cursive handwriting. Basically all the same but with the tails on the end of them. I loved it. Now, brace yourselves, they now teach cursive to 4 year olds!! Yeah, you heard me right...CURSIVE!! Well that just threw me for a loop. So what do I do? If I start in manuscript then will they be able to carry on with that program which I like so much or will I have to choose a different one? Is starting in cursive too much for them? They are 4 for crying out loud! :) How are they going to learn to read in print if they don't know how to recognize and write the letters in print? Should I do both? As in do printing one week and cursive of the same letter the next or will that be too confusing??? Am I putting too much thought into this?? So many options so many thoughts!! I was standing there trying to decide and I looked at the lady and said "I wish someone would just tell me what to do." Lindsay, I so thought of you when I said that. :)
So here's what I did. I ordered the cursive and thought that I could always use them next year if I wanted. I then came home (after my head had cleared) and got online to look at the other grades to see if they could start learning cursive in say first grade or kindergarten if they were ready. They can SO start later with that same program. Yay!
So here's what I'm going to do! I emailed them tonight and I'm calling the company tomorrow to see if they will change my order to manuscript. Please pray that they will and that it will get shipped quickly. Also please pray for peace about my decision. I know that may sound silly, but the education of my kids is in MY hands...thats really scary! I would also LOVE some input!! Please tell me what you would do or what you think I should do. Am I thinking logically?

What a day for your family, April. I'm so sorry to hear about your van...a difficult situation, but so glad William is okay. I know God will get you through this rough patch. Please let me know if there is ANYthing I can do!
As far as the handwriting dilemma, I am stunned that cursive is being taught to 4 year olds...I had no idea. WHO teaches cursive to 4 year olds exactly though? I have not heard of this in area preschools, but maybe I'm just ignorant?! Honestly, I cannot imagine trying to teach Alex (who is almost 4) cursive. I personally would start with print for a multitude of reasons, but especially to develop reading
skills. Truly, I'm no expert in this area and pretty much don't know what I'm talking about BUT I know as a mom to MY soon-to-be 4 year old, the cursive route would not be logical at all. Do what feels right for you (and consult someone who understands this way better than us...and then share with us, okay?).
I wish all of this wasn't so agonizing for you and I pray that all of this major stress mainly comes into play when getting started and is not something you feel on a regular basis. I'm sure it is a lot of pressure and I'd be going through the same feelings/decision-making difficulties as well. I pray God can help ease some of these anxieties you are feeling because I'm pretty darn positive He does NOT want you stressing like crazy over this. He wants what He's placed on your heart to feel right...with some challenges along the way possibly...but always for you to feel that it's what you're supposed to be doing with your kiddos.
I'm praying for you, William and your boys tonight.
So sorry to hear about William and the van...ugh.
As for handwriting, I know this sounds lame, but I would teach them whatever the school system the would go to teaches so if you would need to enroll them, they are on track with exactly that and not behind in that area (playing catch up to learn to write exactly how they want them to). I always struggled with FCS teaching the precursive since if we had totake TJ out, he would be behind trying to learn ball and stick letters. i also agree with amy about the reading thing.
I need to scoot;-)
The preschool Luke and Helene went to taught cursive & print. It was part of the A Becka program. I was nervous that they wouldn't get it and they didn't! That was Ok though. They were at least introduced to it. They say cursive is easier, beacause it's more natural for the hand. I see that, but it's a hard one to teach the kids.
I agree that it would be a good idea to possibly follow the handwriting of the local school.
Only YOU can decide what you feel comfortable teaching your children.
I'm amazed how proactive and dedicated to this you are. I'm here to support you!
In Ruby's words, "Oh my!" I'm praying, praying, praying! I think your decision to start with manuscript is an excellent decision, and I totally support you. ((HUGS)) You know I'm here!
FACA teaches cursive at age 4. I guess I will see at the end of the year how much Chunky learns! Yet, the other public school he goes to for 6 hours a week teaches print. He should be quite confused by the end of the year!
Wow! I am so sorry to hear about your tough times. I will be praying for you. :) As far as cursive goes, I am no expert. By 6th grade, my students could do both but most preferred print. I print to this day (though I can write in cursive, too). I think it's good to know how to do each one. Can't wait to see you on Sunday.
